I spent way too many inebriated degrees last evening over at Rider Jeden’s bunk, poised between beach and harbor gurgeward of Teacher Town. He’s one of our…more eccentric members, a math, physics, and engineering genius that long ago outstripped the patience of others to live with his sometimes-explosive ongoing experiments. He seems to enjoy spending most of his time creating theoretical–or actual–sailing design improvements. Some of what he was demonstrating to me last night seemed beyond what I thought possible in terms of stresses placed on the construction materials, but he had rambling, equation-filled explanations for my expressed concerns–none of which I really have the head for understanding, and certainly not after he’s forced three of my namesake shots on me. My last coherent memory of the visit was spending who knows how long staring at the wall opposite his harbor-view windows. It was completely covered with incredibly detailed charts of Gurge currents and fluctuations, beautifully and precisely scribed. I seem to recall he’d measured some potential long-span patterns after looking back across hundreds of years of data, though of course only the last few hundred have enough information to inspire meaningful empirical deductions.
I digress from my point, unsurprisingly given my current state of recovering mind. For my Rider friends, what sorts of alterations or enhancements do you like to Ride with, if any? For others, once you get to a certain point in your art, you feel confident enough to start experimenting with the established conventions of the technicals. How have you brought innovation to your chosen art fields lately?

Interesting stuff to think about, Mikasa. I don’t know. It seems to me the few times I’ve created something new, it’s come out of wanting to make something good, and there not being the tools to do it, so I needed to make one. I don’t remember ever setting out to do something new on purpose. Does that make sense?

Mik reminded me that I hadn’t responded to this, and he agreed to respond to any of mine from now on. It seemed a good trade, since though we’re both Riders we have entirely different world perspectives.
.
I think I’m a new enough Rider that I haven’t really added any mods to board or sail yet, though I’ve ridden a few of Jeden’s crazier craft (only in the harbor, of course). I’m still learning the limits of what I can do with my unaltered craft.
.
I’m making closer friends with Lili (a dolphin I met during my intensive with finpod, written about earlier), so perhaps when I’m ready to mod I’ll ask her advice! On the other side, your suggestion about developing art and craft makes sense to me when I apply it to cliff-climbing. Give me any handicap you care to name and I’ll still beat you to the goal-point; after you’ve climbed a ‘face a few thousand times you start varying your routine however you can imagine.
- Fali, Rider and Spelaean
Hey, Mik, you sneaky wader! I just noticed you haven’t answered your own question here, do tell!
-Fali
Fali: Fair enough; your raptor-sharp vision will serve you well when navigating tricky Gurge currents, hehe.
.
I tie my sail on the non-modded side of the equation myself, in the general sense. However, I’ll use a mod when a specific situation calls for it and never think twice on my choice. Over the years I’ve trimmed and shaped my keel through my experience of what works best for me in responding to the water.
.
Jeden’s nearly convinced me on the mast mods debate, though I’m still concerned that if you strengthen mast too much without balancing it might tear apart the rest of your board in rough waters. He and his supporters are quite convincing, and I’m edgy about going up against a mast mod in the next Rider race.
.
I’m definitely interested in hearing Lili’s input, when you get around to asking it. I’m friendly with the cetae but never spent the time to get more connected with them like you are. As far as the climbing, I’m quite content to enjoy the view from below and concede your prowess; I’m sure you Spelae have noticed the wonders both climbing and Gurge riding do for one’s glutes…
.
Would you have any interest at all in going with me on a Dive? You can bring Lili along too, if she’s the adventurous sort–though don’t worry, I wouldn’t take you near any of the known unstable points. You learn about the Gurge, and the sea, from a new viewpoint entirely, underneath there. Ping my emkay if you like the notion and we’ll arrange the details.
